At the end of 2024, Bulgarian Encyclopaedia Scientific Information Centre started the “BULGARIAN ONLINE ENCYCLOPEDIA” Project. The Centre won Project No. BG-RRP-2.017-0023 “The Bulgarian Online Encyclopedia. Connected and accessible encyclopedic knowledge” under the Recovery and Resilience Plan in partnership with the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies – BAS, funded by the European Union with the “NextGeneration EU” initiative.
The Bulgarian Encyclopedia‘s efforts to provide reliable, scientifically-based, carefully-assembled and user-friendly information resources to the Bulgarian public were appreciated and received financial support from the Recovery and Resilience Facility for investment implementation under C2I2 “Increasing the innovation capacity of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) in the field of green and digital technologies” within the Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The Project foresees new software and information content development. Modern online data will be freely accessible and provide options to quickly and easily find information. The online platform will serve pupils and students’ educational needs and meet the demand for reliable information on various topics.
With the advancement of technology and the opportunities to compile and store large data sets, online encyclopedic resources are becoming an increasingly attractive approach to providing free access to comprehensible, secure and scientifically-based information, countering fake news and conspiracy theories. It is an important contribution to meeting society’s cognitive needs, complementing educational materials and assisting various businesses in finding factual information.
The online encyclopedia will be build using the rich scientific encyclopedia articles’ resources, visual and archive materials, and Bulgarian Encyclopaedia Scientific Information Centre’s nearly 70 years of experience in making general and specialised encyclopedias. At the end of the project, Bulgarian online encyclopedia is expected to provide a sufficiently large number of updated encyclopedic articles, archive materials and documents for public use. Content will be added and revised even after the funding end date.
