“Big Encyclopedia Bulgaria” is the first modern national encyclopedia published after the democratic changes of 1989. The multi-volume edition was prepared by a team of authors of the Scientific Information Center “Bulgarian Encyclopedia”, consultants from BAS and higher schools, under the chief editorship of Academician Vasil Gyuzelev. The artwork and printing is done by Trud Book Publishing House. The encyclopedia contains the most complete information about the Republic of Bulgaria, covers everything significant for the country – nature, history, economy, science, culture. A huge amount of factual material has been collected and systematized about everything significant that happened on the Bulgarian lands and was created by the Bulgarian people during its 13-century development until 2011. The twelve volumes are spread over 5,000 printed pages and contain 12,840 articles – on historical and political events, parties and public organizations, on enterprises, cultural and scientific institutions, on natural sites, settlements, historical places, cultural, literary and architectural monuments and landmarks , for Bulgarian political, social, scientific, cultural, economic and other figures who have left a lasting mark on the centuries-old life of the people, and for foreigners whose activities are related to Bulgaria. Among the topics in the review are the development of education and science, literature, fine arts, musical and performing arts, theater, cinema and sports. Special attention is paid to community centers, libraries and museums. From all thematic overviews in the article “Bulgaria” there are cross-references to the main articles arranged alphabetically, which are also linked to each other by references, so that readers can obtain the most complete information possible. The edition is supplemented with many archival and contemporary photographs, with tables and color diagrams. “Big Encyclopedia Bulgaria” is an indispensable reference book for every Bulgarian home, for all pupils, students and other readers. In 2011, the edition was awarded by the “Bulgarian Book” association with the “Bronze Lion” national award for the greatest public significance.
