Encyclopedia “Heroes of World Literature”

Encyclopedia “Heroes of World Literature” presents main characters from works of Bulgarian and foreign classical and modern literature – ancient, Western European, American, Latin American, Slavic and Eastern literatures. An edition has been proposed to the Bulgarian book market, in which the subject of research is the characters, not the works and creativity of the writers. The texts cover the basics in the vast world of world literature. Behind the images of the literary characters, the ideas and understandings of the writers shine through. The aspiration of the compilers is to collect and preserve these messages, carrying the knowledge and understanding of the world of mankind from antiquity to the present day, so that the reader can find them in one reference book. To recall the books he has read and look for others that will pique his interest. The authors’ collective of Bulgarian researchers of the relevant literature contributes to the high scientific quality of the encyclopedia. Articles about characters are listed in the main alphabetical section. The title of each article contains the name of the literary character, the definition indicates from which work and by which writer it is. The content of the article covers the characterization of the character according to the work and introduces the plot line in which it falls, its symbolic meanings. At the end of the article, brief information about the most famous theatrical productions or film adaptations is given. The edition is supplemented with a directory of writers, which contains a short biographical article on the authors of all mentioned literary works. An alphabetical index has also been made for the convenience of the reader. The texts are the work of a collective of authors edited by the team of the Scientific Information Center “Bulgarian Encyclopedia” at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The edition was realized by Publishing house “Trud”. The encyclopedia is intended for a wide range of readers – schoolchildren, students, teachers of literature, theater scholars, as well as for all lovers of fiction.
