“BULGARIAN CALENDAR HOLIDAYS AND OBSERVANCES”

“BULGARIAN CALENDAR HOLIDAYS AND OBSERVANCES”

The content presents in a synthesized form the richness of the Bulgarian calendar-holiday ritual, illustrated with rich illustrative material. Each holiday is given that circle of folk ideas, beliefs, ritual actions and objects that form its core. The regional specificity in ritual and terminology is conveyed, albeit incompletely. The description of the traditional holidays is supplemented with data on the Orthodox Christian calendar, a brief biography of the patron saint of the holiday, or the Christian legend associated with this day, which gives some insight into the complex relationship between paganism and Christianity. For readers who want to practically keep the tradition in its most accessible and preserved form – food, recipes for preparing basic holiday dishes have been selected, arranged in the “Traditional Holiday Table” application. Presented in an accessible and intriguing form and light, readable language, the book reaches a wide range of readers, as evidenced by the six successful editions of it on the Bulgarian book market. The compilation and encyclopedic preparation of the edition (supplemented and revised for each new edition) was carried out by scientific editors at the Scientific Information Center “Bulgarian Encyclopedia” – BAS. In 2019, a complete translation of the text into English was prepared and published in an independent edition. The design of all editions of the directory is by Academic Publishing House “Acad. Marin Drinov”.
